What Makes a Great Magazine

Celebrities - If a magazine uses a popular celebrity on their front cover then people will want to buy the magazine because they will want to know why the celebrity is on the cover and find out more information about them.
latina-march-2008
New information - This could be gossip about a celebrity, spoilers on a movie/TV show, or any sort of exclusive which readers will only get from a particular magazine/issue.

An eye catching image - If it is a women's magazine, then it can be an attractive woman in a bikini, as women will want to look like her and her "secrets" will most likely be inside the magazine. For a men's magazine it could be a man who has a lot of muscle and men will also want to know how they became to look like that. Another example is a car magazine, an image of a brand new car on the cover would make someone want to buy the magazine so they can find out more information about it.

Interesting Articles - Writing in a large typography on the front cover will catch the eye and it needs to be bold, straight to the point and make the reader want to know more.

Unique Theme - If the theme of the cover matches the story they are promoting then the audience will remember it and find it clever.

Analysis of Website

I concentrated on using dark colours and lighting to show that the film is a thriller; the background is of a well populated city at night because this is where a lot of the film will take place. The font used for "The Key" is formal, there aren't any curves in the letter, it is all very straight to show the seriousness of the film. At the bottom right there is a picture of an unidentifiable man pointing a gun, this means that there is a bit of action and mystery in the film.

There are buttons at the top of the website because they are always used

Analysis of Storyboard

I have made the genre of my film quite clear with the use of colour; most of the scenes are full of dark colours such as black and brown, and a dull yellow, this shows that the film will have a serious tone, and will be aimed for adults. The first few scenes use dark colours and lighting because they are showing the characters boring life, you would no expect to see bright, stand out colours for scenes like this. The camera angles are wide shots from behind the main character because I am trying to portray the story from his perspective.
In one scene I use contrast by changing using bright colours and lighting because this one scene shows the main character in a brief moment of happiness, but the next scene reverts back to the dark lighting and colours so that the audience know that this is still a thriller.

The music/score is comprised of an orchestra who are playing at a low pitch and slow tempo, the effect is that it builds tension and suspense,  whereas medium paced and higher pitched music is associated with family/comedy films. The voice over introduces the main character then hints his suicide before saying, "Until this moment", this puts the viewer on the edge of their seat because the want to know the twist in the story.
The trailer starts with a montage of the character during his usual work day which is quite slow paced and boring, but towards the end of the trailer another quick montage shows him living the "high-life" with money, women and power.

The trailer starts with the "Paramount" logo, this shows that the film is a high-budget production because a famous company behind it.

The character is portrayed as insignificant and weak at the beginning of the trailer, I have shown this by using wide, high angle shots, because even though he is given the main focus, a lot is happening around him which means he isn't important. However the second half of the trailer shows him as a more confident and important figure because close/medium shots are used and he is wearing smart, expensive clothes.

The setting in the second shot is in a busy street full of people which means he works/lives in a city with a lot of important people, but he isn't one of them. The third shot is similar, he is shown standing in a train station full of crowded people and then in an office with many people rushing around, whilst he just sits in a cubicle doing menial work.

I think audiences will want to see my film because there is a lot of mystery yet enough story not to confuse the viewer; the final shot is a cliffhanger because he is being held at gun point so the audience will want to know what happens to him; at the start of the trailer he is an ordinary man, but throughout he trailer you see him change into this confident, powerful man, but it is no shown exactly how it happens, so the audience will also be ancticpating the answer to this.

This is England

  1. The production company's are called Film4 and Warp Films.
  2. Shane Meadows directed the film.
  3. The budget of the film was $2,380,000.
  4. The film grossed $8,176,544.
  5. The film won awards from BAFTA, British Independent Film, London Film Festival and many more international awards.
  6. The poster is shot outside, which means no expensive studio was used, the lighting isn't used for effect anywhere as many medium/high budget films use, mostly unknown actors are shown, the environment looks to be a poor area and in the background you can see council estate buildings. The website looks cheaply created as an unrecognizable building is in the background and the trailer is at the forefront, the rest of the website doesn't look professional compared to other film websites, which fits with the films tone.
  7. The poster and website doesn't seem to fall into the gang-crime genre as the colours are quite bright and there are no gangs, weapons or any common conventions of the genre, however it does fit with setting of the film which is shown to be a poor, lower/working class area because they are standing by a rusty fence with council estate buildings in the background; they are dressed in clothes from a few decades ago which means this is a time-period film, and the clothes look worn out and cheap.
  8. The target audience would be mostly British people as they will be able to connect with the characters better than a foreign audience who haven't lived in a similar environment, however this may also be a reason why they would want to watch the film, to see what the lower class areas of England were like back in the 80s. Others who grew up in the 80s would want to see how true the film is to the them, or their children who want to know what their origins are.

Bridesmaids

  1. The production company's are Relative Media and Apatow Productions.
  2. Paul Feig directed the film.
  3. The budget for the film was $32.5 million.
  4. The film grossed $288,383,523.
  5. The film won an AFI award, BSFC Award, Critics Choice Award, IFTA award, Sierra Award and a People's Choice Award.
  6. The film poster is quite basic, which shows it has a medium budget as the background is just a brick wall, and well-known but not famous actress' are used to portray the characters.
  7. In the poster the characters look quite rough but very serious faces which contrasts with the rest of the poster as the colors are quite bright; they are wearing pink dresses whilst the bride is wearing a bright white dress which means the film will be quite light-hearted or funny.
  8. The target audience is female as all the characters are women who are trying to look "cool" and the title is Bridemaids. This is a job many women will go through or have already been through so they will want to watch so they know what it's going to be like or recall their time as a Bridesmaid.

Fast & the Furious 5

  1. The production company's that made this film are called Original Film and One Race Film.
  2. Justin Lin directed the film.
  3. The budget of the film was $125 million.
  4. The film grossed $626.1 million
  5. Brian Tyler won an award at the BMI Film & TV Awards for the Film Music and won the Best Action Movie award at the Teen Choice Awards. It became the highest grossing film in the Fast and Furious franchise.
  6. The poster shows all the characters, who are played by famous actors who generally cost a lot of money.
  7. The actors are commonly used in action films, they look like they have been through a fight, all of them look very serious and some of them are carrying weapons.
  8. The general audience is men, probably teenagers and above because the franchise is known to be about cars and violence, women are shown very seductively, almost as an object because it appeals to the male audience.

Film Trailers

Actors - The main character is featured prominently throughout the trailer, and the viewer will often see all events from their point of view. Large, intimidating men in action trailers are generally the villain and they are seen as unstoppable. Christian Bale is known as Batman, Liam Neeson is known for thriller films and Tom Hardy is known for fighting films, etc.
Face/Body -Very serious expressions, extras looking worried possibly because of an incoming danger, the villain stands tall and above everyone to show he is taking over/better than everyone.
Costume - Casual clothes means that the film will be about in an ordinary character who either has a double life or someone who falls into a problem and then the trailer will show the events which happen after that. But if the men are in suits and look presentable then they will be agents or someone who is prepared from any problems.
Action/Props - Fight scenes, weapons, explosions are conventions of action films and are seen in most action trailers.
Colours - Light in the beginning and getting dark towards the end shows the contrast in the films tone eg, it starts off calm and then something causes the story to because exciting and dangerous.
Certificate - 12) mild violence and adult themes, some low-level bad language which will interest adults but is also okay for children to watch with an adult. 15) A lot of violence, some gore/blood, adult themes, strong language and adult references.
Release Date - Summer release date means the studio hopes it will be a big film which gains a lot of profit as many big budget, popular or sequels are released between June and September so there will be a lot of competition.
Awards - Awards from respected reviewers will increase the chance of people watching the film, such as an Oscar, Bafta, Golden Globe, etc.
Website - There will be more information, pictures and videos on the website so the viewer gain more interest if the website is well designed and appeals to its target audience.
